'The Daily 5' is our main Resilience Training programme at That Thing I Do.
These 10 minute are designed to be repeated up to 5 times each week. We recommend aiming for using each Daily 5 for 3 of the days in the school week, and on the other days, explore the other videos associated with the topic for the week
For example:
On Week 1:
-
Monday: The Daily 5 - 1. Courage
-
Tuesday: pick a Movement Break (choose any!) and then 'Breakdown The Pose - 1. Courage'
-
Wednesday: The Daily 5 - 1. Courage
-
Thursday: a Movement Break and then 'Breakdown The Pose - 1. Courage'
-
Friday: The Daily 5 - 1. Courage
Each week we have a theme word to focus on as we explore how to become more resilient. This develops emotional awareness and intelligence, a key to mental resilience. You, as the teacher, can help the class explore each topic more.
We go to a different location for each week of The Daily 5 and we bring it into the classroom! From forests, to beaches, seas and lakes; from clifftops to old ruins - we love to explore!

Each of the five steps in The Daily 5 provide a tool for developing and teaching resilience.
-
Step 1 is THINK: How am i feeling? A simple repetitive question to help us think about how we are feeling.
-
Step 2 is to JUMP: Time to play the funky music and get the body moving, the heart rate up and get physically fitter and stronger!
-
Step 3 is to STRETCH AND BREATHE: Let's take a deep breath and do some stretching and breathing to help us regulate and calm our body, while building strength. We focus on a 'pose' to help with stretching. The 'Breakdown The Pose' video for the week's Stretch and Breath pose is essential viewing to help teach our simple mindfulness technique: 'The Butterfly Mind'! By simply imagining that our focus and attention is a butterfly, we can more easily choose where our focus is and how to move our attention from one thing to another.
-
Step 4 is to FIND MY ANCHOR: Developing mental resilience means knowing how deal with the tricky feelings and emotions. We focus on our theme word and become mindful of what this word (or phrase) means. Doing this helps us learn and recognise helpful thoughts and feelings through the theme for the week, and how they can help with tricky feelings and emotions.
-
Step 5 is READY AND RESILIENT: After going through our Steps we then must get ready to transition back into our day. We are becoming more ready and resilient, able to return to our day!
